We are industry leaders.
This is my story of how I got started in this industry.
All my life I have been told that I am great with technology and computers. I’ve always been the go-to person to help friends & family with any technology needs that they have had. Naturally, that led me to attend College for Computer Information Systems. Long story short – I’m not a programmer – and I got bored with that program pretty quick.
I had a very close friend reach out to me and let me know she needed help with a work event out in Boston (back in 2015). She worked at a Website Hosting Company – and I was only slightly familiar with the industry as a whole. She introduced me to this industry, and is what has been a big factor in my success today; For that, I am ever thankful, Von!
The event she needed help with was the Beginners track for Joomla!Day Boston, 2015. I sat in on an all-day track for people who were new to Joomla!, having never looked at it myself. Right away, I was able to help answer questions that people were asking, and guide them around on how to do things. I went back home to Michigan a few days later, knowing this is what I needed to do, and where I wanted to be.
I worked hard, and applied myself to get a Customer Support Engineer position at that website hosting company, and started in early 2016. I loved the position, working with customers, and working with tech. Getting to travel to WordPress & Joomla! events were just some fantastic icing on the cake. After being with them for about a year and a half, I was asked to be the Support Team Lead. I had a fantastic team behind me, and we made wonderful changes & progress with the company.
In 2019, I knew it was about time for a change of scenery. As much as I really liked where I worked, I couldn’t learn much more from being there. So, I wound up at an Internet Marketing Company in late 2019. They were wonderful to me – and I was working with yet another fantastic team. I quickly found that I was not going to be able to progress my career very much at all there either, though (progress and the possibility of “climbing the ladder” is something I really appreciate). So, I went on the hunt again in the Spring of 2020.
Next up, I wound up at a WordPress Plugin Company! Do you know what I found out there? I had a lot to learn about how WordPress functions, and all the different things just one plugin can do to help a business grow. They focused on Non-Profits and Fundraisers, and I adored that about them. Unfortunately, my role was quickly shifting more towards code-related knowledge and needing some lower-level developer skills. While I can learn this, I don’t find much enjoyment out of it, and I knew the company & I were not a good fit (as long as I was in that position, anyway). I learned everything I could within a few months, and once again, away I went!
In July of 2020, I went back to another Internet Marketing Agency. This new one pulled together a lot of what I learned at these other positions, and also focused on Non-profits. I was able to choose my title, and I went with the “Director of Marketing Software”. The plan was for me to advise both the company & the clients on what software/SaaS they should be using, and how to do so. The rest of the time, I was to handle the entire Monthly Maintenance plans and create a team to work with me. Unfortunately (I know, again?), I was told in October that they did not have the work-load to keep me on. So that plan failed through.
As of now, I am on the hunt again. I will say, I learned an insane amount of knowledge in the industry and gained a tremendous amount of experience in leadership throughout all those positions. I made friends around the world, learned things I could have never imagined, and met some of the most incredible souls you will ever find. I’m looking for a place that checks all my boxes now. Somewhere that I fit in (on both accounts), that I can learn from and they can learn from me, and where I can spend the rest of my career. I want that perfect fit, and I won’t give up until I find it.
Stay tuned for more updates, friends!
